About being specific as a leader

This week I got inspired by the following thoughts of a leader I work with and I’m using my own words to explain his message.

When aiming for a goal or a change, choose concrete language.

Dare to be concrete.

By being specific in your language, you create a frame which helps you reach the objective.

When there is high psychological safety in a team, people feel comfortable and dare to be specific.

They feel safe to create very specific goals.

Moreover, they feel safe to adapt those specific goals, if they cannot achieve them.

That is what you strive for as a leader.

On the other hand, if you choose fluffy language - just to avoid vulnerability - you will not reach as much as if you were specific.

Fluffy language leads to fluffy objectives with expectations not being clearly communicated and more room for interpretation and misunderstandings.

What is your experience?
