The Selfish Nature of True Empathy

Trying to understand other people doesn't just help with communication and connection.

Lately, I’ve realized something: Empathy is actually also deeply selfish.

Because it gives me inner peace.

The better I grasp another person’s perspective—the more I can step into their reality—the quieter the noise inside my own head becomes.

When you truly recognize and accept the duality of life—that there isn't just one truth, and not just your own reality—your world expands. It stops the exhausting fight against how things "should" be. It releases the friction and brings a deep sense of calm.

If you want to try this shift for yourself the next time friction arises, take yourself through these three steps:

  1. Map their reality: What is the other person actually seeing, feeling, or fearing right now? Try to explore their perspective without immediately judging it.

  2. Step into their shoes: Can you genuinely try on their viewpoint for a moment and understand why they act the way they do?

  3. Notice the shift: Notice how the pure frustration inside you dissolves. Replacing blank incomprehension with genuine understanding doesn’t just help them—it instantly creates quiet, peace, and freedom within yourself.

How does changing your perspective change the noise inside your own head?
